The Marion girls’ basketball team ended a three-game winning streak, falling to Nickerson 61-47 Tuesday night in Marion.
The Warriors shot 32.5 percent from the field and 3-of-23 from three in the loss. Nickerson out-rebounded Marion 39-25.
Starting the game with a 4-0 spurt, Marion fell behind the Panthers in the first quarter courtesy of a 11-2 quarter-ending run by Nickerson. In the second quarter, Nickerson outscored Marion 12-7 to end the half 23-13.
Finding itself down 45-27 at one point in the second half, Marion made a fourth-quarter 13-1 run to narrow the lead to 46-40 with 3:10 left to play. Lindsay Hett and Whitney Gordon hit threes during the spurt.
The Warriors never came closer than six as Nickerson closed out the game with a 14-point victory.
Four Panthers finished with double digit scoring. Brandy Mader had 17, Ashley Almquist scored 14, Shelby Morford had 12 and Baye Harper finished with 10.
Julia Zeiner led the Warriors with 18 points. Hett scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out five assists, blocked three shot and stole the ball five times. Whitney Gordon finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.
Marion drops to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in MCAA play.
Marion boys dropped their sixth straight game, getting dominated by Nickerson 57-22.
The Panthers began the game with a 17-2 first quarter. The Warriors trailed Nickerson 36-13 going in to halftime.
In the second half, Nickerson extended its lead to 53-22, triggering a fourth-quarter running clock. The game ended 57-22.
Marion drops to 5-12 overall and 2-7 in MCAA play. Marion host Hillsboro on Thursday for senior night. Following Thursday, Marion has two regular season games left before sub state, which starts March 4.
