The Marion basketball teams swept the Wichita Warriors Thursday to even their pool play records at 1-1.
Girls—Marion earned a 42-38 victory Thursday.
The home team trailed at the end of the first quarter, 8-6, but Kourtney Hansen and Sam Richmond scored in succession to start the second quarter and give Marion the lead. Following a 10-10 tie, Marion went on a 6-0 run, and maintained a lead at halftime, 19-15.
Hansen scored the final five points of the third quarter to give Marion its largest lead of the night by the end of it, 29-21.
The visitors closed the gap with a 7-2 rally to start the fourth quarter, then neither team scored the next three minutes. Jessi Lewman broke the drought with a basket at the 3:31 mark, and Marion built its lead to seven a couple times. Richmond scored Marion’s final three points at the charity stripe, and the game’s leading scorer, Faith Schwemmer, drained a three-pointer at the buzzer, bringing it to the final, four-point spread.
Schwemmer scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Wichita.
Meanwhile, Hansen led Marion with 17 points. Richmond added 10.
Boys—Marion picked up its first win of the season by a 60-52 margin Thursday.
Four members of the home team scored in double figures to lead the charge as Marion shot nearly 49 percent from the field in the game (19-for-39), compared to 31 percent for Wichita (19-for-62).
After the visitors made the first basket, Marion went on a 10-0 run. Mason Pedersen scored three-point baskets to start and end the run, with Nathan Baldwin scoring four points in between.
Marion took its first double-digit lead when Pedersen and Noah Dalrymple scored in succession, 19-6, and the home team led, 19-12 at the first break.
The teams played evenly through the second quarter, with each scoring 14 points. Pedersen led the charge for Marion with six points in the quarter for a 33-26 Marion lead at halftime.
Marion scored six in a row to start the fourth quarter, but after that, Wichita outscored Marion, 18-6. The visitors closed within 45-44 by the end of the period, thanks to four three-pointers in the final 2:47.
Marion responded by scoring eight consecutive points to start the fourth quarter. Dalrymple scored four of those points and also recorded two blocks on consecutive Wichita possessions. The closest Wichita got after that was within four, 54-50, with 1:28 to play, and Marion made six of eight free-throws attempted after that to seal the win.
Pedersen led Marion with 18 points. Three Warriors scored 10: Peyton Heidebrecht, Zachary Stuchlik and Dalrymple.
