Updated: Marion gets two wins in first-round games of Cougar Classic

The Marion basketball teams swept their first-round games at the Cougar Classic tournament at Centre Tuesday. The third-seeded Marion girls opened with a 47-32 victory over No. 6 Wakefield. The fifth-seeded Marion boys then defeated No. 4 Solomon, 60-40. Katey Ehrlich ties the score at 4 with a basket during the first quarter against Wakefield Tuesday. Ehrlich scored 14 points in Marion?s 47-32 first-round victory.

GIRLS?Wakefield hung with Marion for the first quarter, but after that, the Warriors began to pull away en route to their 47-32 victory over the Bombers Tuesday night.

The Bombers scored the first points of the game, and the teams exchanged baskets until Julia Hall scored a second-chance basket off a Warrior steal to give Marion its first lead, 8-6. The Bombers surged with six unanswered points to stake a 12-8 lead, and the first quarter ended with Marion trailing 12-10 after Katey Ehrlich scored with 35 seconds left.

The Warriors took control in the second quarter, gaining the lead for good when Bailey Robson cashed in a three-point play. Kelli Hess and Ehrlich followed with consecutive scores to push the Warrior lead to 17-12, and the Warriors never looked back.

Hess scored back-to-back baskets, and suddenly, Marion held a double-digit, 24-14, advantage. The Warriors increased their lead to 31-18 at halftime.

Wakefield pulled within 31-22, but Marion regained a double-digit lead and maintained it the duration of the game. The third quarter ended with Marion leading, 37-25.

The Warriors surged 6-0 out of the final break to lead 43-25 after a basket by Hess. The Bombers scored six unanswered points after that, but after baskets by Ehrlich and Robson, the Warriors led, 47-31, with 2:32 left in the game. The Bombers scored one last free throw for the final, 47-32, score.

Hess led Marion with 15 points. Ehrlich added 14.

BOYS?The Marion boys led from start to finish in their opening game of the Cougar Classic against Solomon.

Grif Case scored Marion?s first four points before Solomon got on the board with a three-point play. Baskets by James Jones and Taylor Heidebrecht gave Marion an 8-3 advantage. Marion pulled ahead to lead 13-5 after Case made a basket, and a Timothy Knolla three-pointer increased Marion?s lead to 18-9 by the end of the first quarter.

Solomon narrowed the gap to 18-13 before Heidebrecht scored two baskets off back-to-back turnovers. Zach Robson scored with 3:35 left before halftime to push Marion?s lead to 24-13.

The Marion defense continued to pressure the Gorillas, and a three-pointer by Knolla with 4 seconds left in the half gave Marion a 33-18 advantage at intermission.

The teams traded baskets to start the second half until Heidebrecht followed a Knolla three-pointer with a fast-break basket for a 44-26 score. The third quarter ended with Marion in front, 47-30.

The Warriors cruised through the final quarter to lead by 20 when time expired.

Three Warriors scored in double figures. Knolla led Marion with 15 points. Case added 12 and Robson 11.

COMING?Semi-final games will take place Friday. The Marion girls will play No. 2 Rural Vista Friday at 4 p.m. Rural Vista defeated No. 7 Peabody-Burns 42-20 Tuesday.

The Marion boys are scheduled to play No. 1 Rural Vista Friday at 5:30 p.m. Rural Vista defeated No. 8 Elyria Christian 59-16 Tuesday.
