Marion splits games with Centre on Day 2 of Cougar Classic

Marion split two games with Centre Friday on Day 2 of the Cougar Classic tournament. The girls won, 59-31. The boys lost, 77-71.

Girls—Marion rolled to a 59-31 victory over host Centre Friday in Game 2 of the Cougar Classic.

Kourtney Hansen paved the way for the Warriors with 26 points, including 13 in the first period to contribute to a 17-4 Marion lead at the first break.

Centre battled back by outscoring Marion, 13-6 in the second quarter, led by Kelsey Hett with seven points, five of which came at the free-throw line. Marion led, 23-17, at halftime.

A 15-6 Warrior effort in the third quarter gave Marion a double-digit advantage by the end of the period, 38-23. Hansen scored nine points in the quarter.

Led by 12 points from Courtney Herzet, Marion outscored Centre, 21-8 in the fourth quarter, bringing it to the final, 28-point spread.

Hansen led all scorers with 26 points. Herzet scored 12.

Boys—Marion suffered a 77-71 loss to Centre on Day 2 of the Cougar Classic Friday.

Centre claimed the lead in a high-scoring first-quarter, bursting to a 27-21 advantage after one quarter of play.

The Cougars extended their lead to 49-41 at halftime, with Cole Srajer scoring 29 of Centre’s first-half points.

Marion made up some ground in the third quarter by outscoring the home team, 18-15 to close the gap to 64-59 at the final break.

But Centre maintained its lead in the fourth quarter, and won by six in the end.

Coming—The girls will play Rural Vista in the championship Saturday at 5 p.m. The boys will play Rural Vista for third place at 6:30 p.m.
