Marion splits games with Berean Academy

Marion split two games with Berean Academy Friday. The girls won, 36-35. The boys lost, 53-38.

Girls—Marion defeated Berean Academy, 36-35, Friday at home in a game postponed twice because of weather.

Marion trailed, 12-7, after the first quarter, and 18-14 at halftime. But the home team benefitted from a big third quarter, doubling its score and outscoring Berean, 14-9, to slip ahead by a 28-27 margin by the final break. Sam Richmond and Corrina Crabb each drained three-pointers in the period to aid the effort.

The teams played evenly through the fourth quarter, 8-8, giving Marion the one-point victory. Kourtney Hansen and Alli Molleker accounted for all of Marion’s scoring in the final quarter, as each made a pair of two-pointers.

Hansen led all scorers with 12 points. Marion made seven of 10 free-throws attempted (70 percent).

Boys—Marion lost to Berean Academy, 53-38, Friday.

Marion built a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, led by Chase Stringer with five points. But Marion managed just five points in the second quarter, allowing Berean to take the lead by halftime, 21-20.

The visitors exploded with a 17-point third quarter, while Marion managed just seven points in the period, led by Sam Zinn and Evann Heidebrecht with three points each.

Eli Hett and Zachary Stuchlik each drained three-pointers in the final period, but Berean extended its lead to claim the 15-point win.

Stringer led the Warriors with nine points. Heidebrecht scored eight.

Coming—Marion will compete in the Class 2A substate hosted by Hillsboro next week. The girls will host Herington Monday at 7 p.m. The boys will play at Inman Tuesday at 7 p.m. Semifinal and final games will be played at Hillsboro.
