Marion splits games with Bennington

The Marion basketball teams split games with Bennington Friday. The girls won, 35-25. The boys lost, 54-47.

Girls—Marion defeated Bennington Friday, 35-25.

The Warriors claimed a narrow, 8-7 lead through one quarter of play. Alli Molleker led all scorers in the period with four points.

In the second quarter, Kourtney Hansen almost singlehandedly contributed to Marion’s scoring column, exploding with eight points en route to her game-high 15 for the night. At halftime, Marion led, 18-12.

Hansen was held scoreless in the third quarter, but Sam Richmond drained a three, and Jessi Lewman made a pair of two-pointers. Corrina Crabb also made a basket, giving Marion a 27-19 advantage at the final break.

Hansen scored four of Marion’s eight fourth-quarter points, and Marion extended its lead to double digits at the final buzzer.

Boys—Marion suffered a 54-47 defeat to Bennington Friday.

Marion trailed, 9-7 after one quarter, as Evann Heidebrecht drained a three-pointer, and Zachary Stuchlik and Blaine Mermis each made two-point baskets.

By halftime, however, Marion had taken the lead, 22-21, led by Heidebrecht, who scored six points in the quarter.

But the Bulldogs battled back in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors, 17-12, to regain the advantage, 38-34.

A 16-13 Bulldog effort in the fourth quarter secured Bennington’s seven-point win. Ten of Bennington’s final 16 points came at the free-throw line.

Heidebrecht led the Warriors with 14 points.

Coming—Marion will participate in the Cougar Classic at Centre next week. The girls will play Wakefield Tuesday at 4 p.m. The boys will play Solomon at 5:30 p.m.
