Marion splits final games of Classic

Girls?The Warriors claimed third place in the Marion Classic with a 52-18 victory over Eureka Saturday.

Marion burst out of the gate on fire offensively. Kirsten Hansen hit a three-pointer to start things off, and the Warriors held a 7-0 lead before Eureka got on the board with a free throw at the 5:51 mark.

From there, it was all Marion, as the Warriors finished the first quarter with an 8-0 burst for a 15-1 lead by the end of the period.

Eureka broke its scoring drought 13 seconds into the second quarter, but the closest the Tornadoes drew was within 10. Marion closed the half with a 9-2 run in the final 2:55 to extend its lead to 29-12 at halftime.

The Warriors continued to build their lead in the third quarter. With a three-point play, Kourtney Hansen ignited a 7-0 run to end the period with Marion leading, 40-15.

Julia Hall and Erika Hess combined for 10 of Marion?s 12 fourth-quarter points, and Marion cruised to victory.

Hall led Marion with 15 points. Kirsten Hansen added 11. Marion shot 58.3 percent from the field (21-36), while Eureka managed 13.2 percent (5-38).Dylan Pippin works the baseline during the first half against Remington Saturday.

Boys?The Warriors let Saturday?s third-place game slip through their fingers in a 52-39 loss to Remington.

Remington?s Garet Johnson, the game?s high scorer with 24 points and 10 rebounds, got things rolling for the Broncos with back-to-back baskets to open the game. He hit a three at the 2:57 mark, and with a second Remington three, the Broncos led, 10-3. Meanwhile, Marion?s first four points came from the charity stripe. Bret Voth made the Warriors? first basket with 14 seconds left to end the first quarter with a 12-6 Bronco lead.

The teams traded threes to open the second quarter, but by the time Johnson reached 14 points on the night with a three-point play, Remington led, 20-10.

Marion rallied from there, as Dylan Pippin, Jacob Baldwin and Peyton Heidebrecht each made two free throws. The Warriors closed the half with a 5-0 run to close the gap to 23-21 at the break.

The Warrior run continued after halftime. Baldwin tied the game 10 seconds in, then Voth gave Marion its only lead, 25-23, less than a minute later. After a 27-27 tie, the Broncos regained the advantage and jumped back in front 35-29 by the end of the third quarter.

Marion turned the ball over on its first three possessions of the fourth quarter, and Remington built a 44-31 advantage with 5:09 to play. That deficit proved insurmountable, and the Broncos went on to win by 13.

Marion committed 19 turnovers in the game, but held a 37-31 advantage in rebounding. The Warriors shot 30 percent from the field (12-40) and were led by Baldwin with 12 points.
