Marion softball suffers sub-state quarterfinal loss to Lyons

The fifth-seeded Marion softball team suffered a 13-1 loss to No. 4 Lyons in five innings Monday in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A regional tournament hosted by Marion.

Warrior bats were silent as Marion managed just one hit in the game. Meanwhile, Marion pitchers issued 11 walks.

After Lyons used five walks to score two runs in the first inning, a six-hit, nine-run second inning all but sealed the Lions’ victory. The Lions worked four walks in the frame and also benefitted from a Warrior error.

Two hit batters and a pair of third-inning walks made it 13-0 through three innings.

Marion got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Shelby Felvus hit a leadoff single—Marion’s only hit of the game—then Kourtney Hansen reached base on the fielder’s choice. Taylor May reached on a dropped third strike, then Paige May reached via error. Taelyn Pagel hit a sacrifice fly to scratch a run across.

Felvus absorbed the pitching loss. In 31/3 innings, she gave up five hits and 10 runs (five earned). She walked eight batters and struck out five. Marion concludes the season with an overall record of 12-9.
