Marion girls win Cougar Classic; boys third

The Marion basketball teams won their final games of the Cougar Classic Monday night.

Girls?Marion claimed the championship title by defeating Elyria Christian, 54-31, Monday.

Marion led, 12-11, after the first quarter, and built a 30-21 halftime lead. By the final break, the Warrior advantage had grown to 40-28. Elyria did not make any field goals in the final quarter, and Marion cruised to the 23-point win. Elyria committed more than 40 turnovers in the game.

Kirsten Hansen led the effort with 11 points. Kourtney Hansen and Elizabeth Meyer each added 10.

Boys?Marion claimed third place in the Cougar Classic by defeating Wakefield, 51-50.

The Warriors ended the first quarter on a 12-4 run to lead, 14-8. Marion led by as many as 15 points en-route to a 34-26 halftime advantage. Tyler Zinn left the game mid-third quarter with an apparent ankle injury and did not return. Evann Heidebrecht drained a three-pointer at the end of the period to give Marion a 47-37 lead at the final break.

Marion did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter, and the Bombers made three three-pointers to trim the margin to 47-46. Evann Heidebrecht made all four free throws he attempted in the final 45 seconds to give Marion a 51-48 cushion. The Warriors fouled a Bomber three-point shooter in the final second, but only two of three charity shots hit their mark.

Zinn led Marion with 22 points. Evann Heidebrecht scored 11. Mason Pedersen added 10.
