Marion girls open at home with a win

The Marion girls picked up the young rebuilding team?s first victory Tuesday 35-29 Tuesday night in its Marion Classic home opener. The Warriors will play for third place? Saturday at 3 p.m. after falling 47-27 Friday night.

In Marion?s first win since the 3A state semifinals, they took a small early lead and grew it slowly throughout the game never outscoring PBHS more than three points in a quarter.

Marion took its biggest lead of the game 23-11 in the third quarter, before PBHS took a 18-12 run to end the game.

Marion won the contest, despite shooting 22.1 percent from the field. The young Warriors relied on free throws for 14 of its 35 points. Marion shot 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.

PBHS shot 33 percent from the field, 75 percent from three, finishing 3-for-4.

Turnovers aided to Marion?s win PBHS gave up the ball 26 times to the host?s 18.

Whitney Gordon led all scorers with 12 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the foul line. She also has 11 rebounds, two assists, three blocked shots, two steals and three turnovers.

Donna Cady shot 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe for seven points. Emily Hett finished with four points, six rebounds, four steals and six turnovers.

Katey Ehrilich scored six points, had five rebounds, three steals, four fouls and no turnovers.

Heather Brooks led PBHS with six points on 2-for-3 shooting. Kaycy Gonzalez finshed with five points. Sarah Hofkanmp had five points, six rebounds and five turnovers.


Berean Academy?s smothering full court press was too much for Marion?s young guards to handle as the Warrior?s fell Friday night.

The Warriors committed 28 turnovers, struggling to get the ball past half-court much of the first half. Marion outscored Berean 11-6 in the fourth quarter.

Berean led 43-16 in the early part of the fourth quarter, its biggest lead.

The Warriors attempted 13 threes, making two for an average of 15.4 percent. From the field, Marion shot 11-for-41.

Marion won the battle on the boards 35-27.

Berean shot 3-of-6 from three and 20-of-52 from the field.

For Berean, Mallory Zuercher was 6-of-10 for 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, four steals and three turnovers. Kayla Wilgers scored 12 points and handed out five assists, four steals and one turnover.

Donna Cady led Marion with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting. Katey Erhlich had eight points, nine rebounds. Whitney Gordon scored three points and a game leading 11 rebounds.

Marion (1-1, 1-2) will face Remington (1-1, 2-1) in the third place game Saturday at 3 p.m. The championship game will feature Eureka (2-0, 2-0) against Berean Academy at 6 p.m. Belle Plaine (0-2, 1-2) will play Peabody-Burns (0-2, 0-3) at noon for fifth place.
