UPDATED: Marion suffers tournament-opening losses to Remington

The Marion basketball teams opened play in the Marion Classic Thursday with losses to Remington.

Girls—Marion suffered a 42-35 loss to Remington. The Warriors trailed, 8-5, after one quarter of play, with Alli Molleker contributing a two-pointer and a free-throw to the effort.

By halftime, Remington held a 15-9 lead. Sam Richmond accounted for all of Marion’s scoring in the second period.

Scoring picked up in the third quarter, with Remington enjoying a slight advantage, 15-12, to take a 30-21 lead into the final period. Kourtney Hansen scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the third quarter.

The Warriors outscored the visitors, 14-12, in the final quarter, aided by a pair of Corin Parmley three-pointers and a three by Richmond, to close the gap to the final, seven-point spread.

Remington’s Sage Westerfield led all scorers with 19 points.

Boys—The Marion boys suffered a tournament-opening loss to Remington Thursday, 58-44.

The teams battled to an 8-8 tie through one quarter of play. Sam Zinn scored half of Marion’s points.

Aided by three three-pointers from Shane Tillotson, Remington outscored the Warriors, 17-12 in the second quarter to take a 25-20 lead at intermission, although Marion countered with three-pointers by Eli Hett and Zachary Stuchlik in the period.

The Broncos gained distance with a 16-7 third-quarter effort, leaving Marion trailing, 41-27 heading into the final period.

The teams played evenly through the fourth quarter. Remington scored 11 of its 17 points at the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Stuchlik scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the final period. Zinn also scored in double figures with 12 points.

Coming—Marion will play Wichita Homeschool Friday. The girls will play at 4 p.m. The boys will play at 5:30 p.m.
