ELECTION: Marion County commissioner’s race too close to call

The District 1 Marion County commission race is too close to call following election results Tuesday.

Only two votes separate the candidates, but with 22 ballots needing to be finalized, the outcome could easily change.

The unofficial grand totals in that race show Craig Dodd with 670 votes and Lori Lalouette-Crawford with 668.

According to Tina Spencer, county clerk and election officer, there are 17 provisional ballots for Commission District 1 and five ballots that could not be read by the machine.

Provisional ballots are used to record a vote when there are questions about the voter?s eligibility such as identification, address changes, misspelled name or other challenges.

?These (provisional ballots) will be researched between now and Monday when the county commissioners canvass the votes,? she said.

As for the election turnout, Spencer said she was pleased with 58 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

In Marion County, she said, there are 7,760 eligible voters and of those 4,507 voted.

Election officials in both Marion and Hillsboro said they had a constant stream of voters throughout the day.

In Marion, one official said they had 1,000 people casting ballots and in Hillsboro, another election officer said there were lines most of the day.

While both polling locations closed the doors at 7 p.m., officials said it was another hour before everyone inside completed their ballot.
