Marion boys take Cougar Classic title at Centre

The Marion boys looked almost on autopilot as they took the Cougar Classic title at Centre Saturday, 56-44. The win puts them at 4-6 overall for the season.

Jacob Harper started off the action for the Warriors, hitting his first of four three-pointers 2:30 into the game and making the assist to Scott Jones to give Marion a 5-4 lead. Ethan Hett and Harper each scored to make it 9-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Mikael Antoszyk found the basket from three-point range at 4:55 in the second quarter to give the Warriors a 12-10 lead. The Lions came back to tie it, but Jordan Hett scored at 2:55 to spark a nine-point scoring spurt, including a three-pointer from Zac Robson, that gave Marion a 23-14 lead at the break.

The Warriors had a shaky third quarter against a Hope team that came out from the locker room aggressive and put up five unanswered points. Jones finally found the basket on the spin move at 4:38 to make it 25-19, Warriors. Taylor Heidebrecht and Hett combined for five points to keep Marion’s lead, but Hope sank two baskets from beyond the arc in the last two minutes of the third quarter to bring them within 32-30 at the end of the period.

But Marion was not about to let their championship slip away from them so easily. Harper lit on fire in the final quarter, draining three baskets from beyond the arc on his way to 16 points in the period. His teammates caught the spark, helping the Warriors to outscore the Lions, 24-14, in the final quarter of the game.

Harper had 24 points on the night and was helped out by 12 points from Hett and eight from Jones. Harper also made the double-double with 14 rebounds. Both Harper and Hett were given All-Tournament honors for their performances.

The Warriors are scheduled to play at Marion Thursday.
