Jim Barnett resigns from Kansas Senate

Jim Barnett, state senator for the 17th District, including most of Marion County, has announced he will resign his seat effective Oct. 1.

Barnett has served in the Kansas Senate for the past 10 years. Prior to that elected office, he served on the Emporia Board of Education for eight years.

Earlier this year he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives from the First District, finishing second in a field of six candidates.

He was the Republican candidate for governor in 2006 but lost to the incumbent, Democrat Kathleen Sebelius.

Within 21 days, the Republi?can Central Committee for the 17th District will call a convention to select the new 17th District senator. Barnett, a physician from Emporia, will announce his plans for the future within the coming week.
