Senior Allie Faul stepped up with 17 points to lead Hillsboro to a 52-26 cruise past Hutchinson Trinity Thursday at the Class 3A sub-state tournament in Halstead.
The Trojans built a 14-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and were never seriously threatened. The Celtics were still within striking distance at halftime at 27-15. But the Trojans expanded that lead to 41-23 after three quarters and then just blew the doors off with an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter. Both teams cleared their benches in the final three minutes or so and the only scoring after that was a single free throw by Trinity.
Faul, scoring from short and long range, enjoyed her most productive game of the season as her team improved to 18-4. Tena Loewen scored 11 and Addie Lackey added nine points to the victory.
As a team, HHS converted 20 of 36 shots from the floor (56 percent) while holding the Celtics to 27 percent (8-30).Trinity finished its season with a 13-8 mark.
The Trojans will play for a state tournament berth Saturday at 6 p.m. at Halstead against the winner of No. 1 seeded Remington and No. 4 Sedgwick.
