The Trojan girls held off a second-half Lion rally to win 57-46, while the boys pulled away late with success at the free-throw line to claim a 41-29 victory.

GIRLS – This game took on a different flavor than the Trojans? 51-28 thrashing of Lyons exactly one week earlier at the Mound?ridge tournament. Hillsboro pulled ahead to a comfortable 14-5 lead after one quarter and maintained a 27-17 advantage at halftime.

If Trojan fans were waiting for HHS to break the game open in the second half, it never happened. By the end of three quarters, the lead had tightened to 42-35. Lyons closed the gap to as little as 49-46 with 3:07 to play before Hillsboro suddenly took off. Addie Lackey lit the fuse with a three-point basket at the 2:06 mark, setting off an 8-0 burst down the stretch. Maci Schlehuber added a basket, Tena Loewen drained a pair of free throws and Danae Bina hit one of two charities for the 11-point victory.

Loewen finished with 17 points, Bina 14 and Lackey 13 as Hillsboro, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, improved to 5-0 for the season while Lyons slipped to 4-2.

BOYS – The Trojans were out for a measure of revenge after Lyons? 41-35 win a week ago at Moundridge, and they looked sharp in the first quarter, establishing a 15-9 lead by the end of it. Shaq Thiessen hit three three-point shots and a two-point basket for 11 points in all to lift HHS.

But Thiessen and his teammates cooled off dramatically after that, managing only 3-for-14 shooting in the second quarter. Hills?boro?s defense proved to be effective enough for the Trojans to bump the margin to 21-13 by halftime. They still led by eight points at the end of the third quarter at 27-19.

Hillsboro pushed the lead to 30-21 after a traditional three-point play by Harry Faber at the 6:49 mark. Both teams were unable to get the ball in the basket until Grady Kirkhart of Lyons hit one of two free throws with 3:56 to play. Teammate James Jared drained a three-pointer and Ryan McClure hit a two-pointer to close the lead to 32-27 with 1:48 to go.

The Trojans, still suffering through another tepid shooting night from the floor, nailed down the victory by hitting nine of 12 free throws in the final 2:05 while holding Lyons to two points on a pair of free throws. Thiessen finished with 16 points to pace HHS. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and improved Hillsboro?s record to 2-3. Lyons fell to 3-3.

After five games on the road to start the season, Hillsboro will play its first games at home Tuesday when the Trojans host Smoky Valley.
