Hillsboro drops both games to Cheney, will play for third place

The Hillsboro girls? and boys? basketball teams lost Game 2 in pool play of the Cardinal Classic on Friday at Cheney. The girls lost to the host team 47-19 while the boys lost 51-45.

It became clear early that the Trojan girls were simply overmatched, as the Cardinals showed a deadly combination of more height, quickness and athleticism through their lineup.

Hillsboro didn?t score in the game until Abi Humber managed a bucket in the paint with 1:23 left in the opening period. By then, Cheney had scored 11 points, and then added one more basket to take a 13-2 lead at the first break. By halftime the score was 28-7, and it was 37-11 after three quarters.

No one broke double digits for HHS, but Humber led the team with seven points as the Trojans drop to 1-2 for the young season.

The boys? game prove to be an even matchup. Hillsboro led 8-7 after one quarter and 28-26 at halftime. By the end of three quarters, Cheney had slipped into the lead at 40-38.

The Trojans enjoyed their last lead at 43-42 when Ben Bebermeyer banked in a 3-pointer with 4:40 left in the contest. After that, the Trojans began to unravel, committing five turnovers, plus enduring a couple of questionable calls by the officials, enabling the Cardinals to expand their lead to as much as 51-43 in the final minute.

Both Hillsboro teams are now 1-2 for the season and will play for third place on Saturday. The girls will play at 2:30 p.m. while the boys will play at 4:30 p.m. Their opponents had not been determined by the time of this report.
