Hillsboro competes in chess tournaments

The Hillsboro High School Chess Guild is off to a very strong start. They completed their fall tournament schedule, taking first place at all three tournaments. On Oct. 13, they played at Smoky Valley with Jacob Denholm getting fifth place, Jason Latham getting ninth place, Kayla Gunn getting 10th place. Kayla also got first place as a female player.

Nov. 3, they played at Canton-Galva with Jacob Denholm getting sixth place, Jason Latham getting ninth place and Kayla Gunn getting 15th place.

Nov. 10 was the home tournament with Jacob Denholm getting second place, Kayla Gunn getting ninth place and Jason Latham getting 19th place. Additionally, new player Olivia Jury played the most plays at the Smokey Valley Tournament.

The Hillsboro Middle School Chess Guild worked really hard even though they only had two on their team. On Oct. 13, they played at Smoky Valley with Zachary Denholm getting 13th place and Joshua Deiner getting 25th place.

On Nov. 3, they played at Canton-Galva with Zachary Denholm getting seventh place. Nov. 10 was the home tournament with Zachary Denholm getting 17th place and Joshua Deiner getting 25th place. New player Mariah Laplante got her first play time at Canton-Galva.

The team looks forward to the spring season that will include four tournaments and the state tournament at Emporia on March 9.
