HHS girls lose, boys win vs. Inman at Moundridge

The Hillsboro girls let a win-able game slip through their fingers, 35-30, while the boys? team prevailed in good form, 50-36, in their second-round games against Inman at the Moundridge Preseason Classic Thursday.

GIRLS — Despite shooting troubles that plagued them all night, the Trojans led the Teutons 9-5 after one quarter and 13-9 at intermission — largely on the strength of a defense that limited Inman to 3-for-14 shooting from the floor and contributed to 16 turnovers.

Hillsboro made only five of 31 shots in the first half, but the game seemed well in hand, given the play of the opponent. The Trojans provided more evidence for that when Allison Weber hit a three-pointer and Alex Ratzlaff followed with a two to bump the lead to 18-9 at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter.

But back-to-back baskets by Inman?s Abby Ropp and Krystan Miller over a 12-second span midway through the period seemed to give a boost of confidence to Inman, who closed the gap to 23-19 by quarter?s end.

Inman?s play continued to strengthen as the fourth quarter began, with a sometimes listless Trojan squad seemingly unable to flip the ?on? switch in response. Inman finally pulled into a tie at 28-28 with 4:15 left in the game, then took the lead on a basket at the 3:13 mark. Hillsboro made only one more basket the rest of the way as the Teutons pulled out the five-point win.

For the game, Hillsboro shot 22 percent from the floor on 12-for-25 shooting. Ratzlaff led the team with 11 points.

BOYS — The Hillsboro boys, coming off a disappointing performance against Lyons in the first round, were energized against a solid Inman squad. Micah Allen scored Hills?boro?s first six points of the game and the Trojans led 11-9 at the first break.

After Braden Vogt opened the second quarter with a three-point basket, Hillsboro didn?t score again until Josh Funk hit a 10-footer with 4:54 left in the quarter for a 16-13 lead. A three by Elias Werth and a pair of free throws by Preston Loewen bumped the lead to 21-16 at halftime.

A 10-0 run by Hillsboro over the first 4:30 of the third quarter put the game in squarely in Hillsboro?s control. Grant Knoll contributed a three and Allen hit two baskets to lead the charge.

Leading 35-24 heading into the final period, the Trojans endured a brief Inman rally through the middle of the quarter, but went on to nail down the 14-point victory.

Allen led the Trojans with 14 points while Preston Loewen came off the bench to toss in 12, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line.

Hillsboro will conclude its week at Moundridge by playing the undefeated host teams Friday. The girls (1-2) will tip off around 7 p.m. and the boys (2-1) will take the court around 8:30 p.m.
