Halloween activities in Marion County

Many small towns in Marion County are opting out of organized Halloween activities for a variety of reasons, but in Hillsboro, Marion and Lehigh festivities are in place.

Hillsboro

Trick-or-Treat Main Street is sponsored by the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and the Hillsboro Convention and Visitors Bureau is adding something new this year to the mix.

A photographer will be on site from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Pictures of children dressed up as little goblins, ghosts, witches or other cute characters will cost $4 for the first picture and $3 for any additional photographs, Gilkey said.

In addition to the photographs, the Chamber of Commerce has coordinated with the other downtown businesses to hand out candy from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Friday.

A Halloween backdrop will be set up at the Hillsboro City Building, 118 E. Grand, and the photographer will be printing and framing the pictures on the spot, she said.

Marion

In Marion, the newspaper office is continuing its tradition of organizing downtown businesses to take part in passing out candy to trick-or-treaters, said Angela Lange, city clerk.

The Marion Record has planned this year?s event to begin at 3 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m., Friday.

Peabody

Jeff Benbrook, city clerk, said Peabody officials made a decision not to have an organized Halloween after problems experienced in previous years.

?In fact, this is the first year we are planning to have a curfew on Halloween night,? he said.

Lincolnville

City Clerk Jane Pigorsch said the community tried coordinating a Halloween event one year, but only 25 to 30 children attended.

?It?s a lot of work decorating for Halloween,? she said.

Even though the city isn?t planning anything special ? other than the traditional door-to-door candy distribution ? Pigorsch welcomes children from outside their city to visit and see how people in Lincolnville decorate for Halloween.

Ramona

Jessica Gilbert, city clerk, said there is no haunted house this year, but it will be back next year.

?A farmer is promising to give the haunted house a permanent location,? she said, ?which would mean we wouldn?t have to reinvent the wheel every year.?

The ?Scarecrows on Parade? will also not be held this year.

Similar to the problems in Lincolnville, it is hard to continue projects with few people volunteering.

?We regret we couldn?t do these things for Halloween, but we are looking forward to next year and having them back.?

Lehigh

The Lehigh Park Committee is planning a Halloween party for children starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the Lehigh City Building, 110 E. Main St.

?We will set the sirens off at 7:30 p.m.,? said Rose Funk, city clerk.

The sirens will then let children know it?s time for snacks and games.

?Everyone in Lehigh Township, the community and parents are invited to attend,? she said.

Other towns in Marion County including Burns, Durham, Florence, Goessel, Lost Springs, and Tampa will have traditional door-to-door trick or treating, but no organized event this year.

Anita Goertzen, city clerk in Goessel, did say that with the girls volleyball team going to state, they have a lot to get ready for ? but still she knows people will keep the Halloween tradition alive in their homes.
