Goessel wins Class 1A-Division I sub-state title to advance to state; Peabody-Burns, Centre, Canton-Galva fall in semifinal round

The Goessel volleyball team cruised to a Class 1A-Division I sub-state championship on its home court Saturday.

As the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Goessel had a first-round bye, then faced No. 4 Peabody-Burns, who had defeated No. 5 Langdon-Fairfield in the quarterfinals (27-25, 20-25, 25-21).

Goessel defeated Peabody-Burns in the semifinals (25-3, 25-5), to face No. 2 Pretty Prairie, the winner of a semifinal game against No. 3 South Haven (25-15, 25-20), both of which had first-round byes.

In the championship, Goessel claimed the two-set victory over Pretty Prairie (25-11, 25-7) to win the championship title and advance to the Class 1A-Division I state volleyball tournament.

The Bluebirds (39-0) will play in the state tournament Friday at Fort Hays State University.

Peabody-Burns concludes the season with an overall record of 9-23.

Meanwhile, Centre went 1-1 at the Class 1A-Division I sub-state tournament hosted by Wakefield Saturday.

The No. 4 Cougars opened with a first-round victory over No. 5 Rural Vista (25-21, 25-20), but lost to No. 1 Lebo in the semifinals (25-21, 25-20).

Centre concludes the season with an overall record of 13-20.

In the Class 2A sub-state hosted by Moundridge, No. 3 Canton-Galva defeated No. 6 Ellinwood in the quarterfinals (15-25, 26-24, 25-10). The Eagles lost to No. 2 Hillsboro in the semifinals (25-15, 25-17).

Canton-Galva concludes the season with an overall record of 20-15.
