Goessel boys top Berean 54-48

The Goessel High School boys basketball team used strict defense in the second quarter to secure a 54-48 home win Tuesday night (Feb. 3) against Berean Academy. After the first quarter ended in an 8-8 draw, the Bluebirds outscored Berean 10-6 to lead 18-14 at halftime. The Bluebirds added a point to their lead with a 15-14 third quarter, and aced Berean again in the fourth.

Austin Unruh scored 20 points on two 2-pointers and 16 free throws as Berean lacked an answer for the Bluebirds power forward. Travis Fensky scored 10.

The GHS girls fell by a 47-40 final margin, as Berean standouts Wilgers and Eilert proved too much to handle, scoring 15 points apiece. After a 9-9 first quarter in which Kendra Flaming scored seven, Berean rattled off 14 points to Goessel's 11, and led 23-20 at halftime. But it was the third quarter that proved pivotal, as Berean held GHS to just six points: two apiece by Karina Harvey, Isabel Tamoj and Karis Janzen. Berean scored 18 points in the period.

Flaming scored seven more in the fourth and finished with 16. Janzen totaled 10, and Harvey had seven.
