Hillsboro dropped both games against Cheney in the second round of Cardinal Classic pool play Tuesday at Brown Gymnasium.
The Trojan girls led Cheney 15-14 at halftime, but the tempo of the game picked up in the third quarter as the Cardinals built a 28-19 lead in the first 5:00 of the period.
To their credit, the Trojans battled back, drawing as close as one point (29-28) when Samantha Heinrichs drained a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter. The Cardinals extended the lead back to eight points at 43-35 with 2:25 left to play and went on to nail down the win.
In the boys? game, a talented Cheney team built a 27-19 lead by halftime, but then kicked its game up a notch in the third quarter with an 8-2 run and never looked back on the way to a 65-45 win.
With their loss, the Trojan girls (0-2) will play for fifth place on Saturday with an 11 a.m. start. Meanwhile, the boys (1-1) will have to wait until Friday night when Cheney squares off with Smoky Valley to know what place they play for on Saturday.
The HHS girls lost to Smoky, 47-40, on Monday night while the boys defeated the Vikings, 47-42.
