Bomgaars opens in City of Hillsboro

Hillsboro no longer has an empty building sitting on Ash Street and Highway 56. It is now home to bomgaars which is a third-generation, family-owned business.

“It started in the 40s. It is family-owned and not a corporation. Roger and Jane Bomgaar own it. It was started by Roger’s grandfather and then his father ran it and now he runs it. He went and bought the Alcos and Shopcos when they went out of business and took over the buildings,” said Manager Jim Sission. “He didn’t have to go out and build new buildings but utilized what he had —pretty safe to say if there is an empty Alco or Shopco somewhere, there will be a bomgaars coming.”

The company is based out of Sioux City, Iowa. It has been expanding throughout the midwest and now has stores in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming and Kansas. The Hillsboro store is the sixth store in Kansas and the 105th store overall.

According to Sission, Hillsboro bomgaars was the fastest to open in “56 days from the day we did our hiring fair to the day we opened on June 17th. They hired 16 applicants locally from the job fair and brought two of their own people.

Sission himself is local. He grew up in Galva and lives in McPherson.

The store had offered sign-ups for prizes on their opening weekend. The prizes included a grand prize Dewalt tool package worth $4200 and other prizes such as a $1000 shopping spree, two $500 shopping sprees, 10 $50 gift cards, $150 wrangler shopping spree and more.

Sission said business has been good and everybody has been positive.

He said, “Everyone has been saying they are glad we are here and they really need a store like this here.”

Sission said the store offers something for everyone including clothes of all kinds at all price points so you can grab something you need without running to another town.

“Our clothing selection runs one whole side and length of the building,” he said.

The store also sells boots, one of the largest selections in the area of Dewalt tools, live bait and much more.

The store is open from 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday. The number is 620-877-8980.
