Bluejays knock off Park University in home non-conference opener, 70-58

The Tabor women’s basketball team may have stuttered out of the gate and trailed most of the game, but the Bluejays hit the gas when it counted in tonight’s home opener as a late rally propelled them past non-conference opponent Park University, 70-58.

The Bluejays struggled in the first half to run their game, trailing by as much as 20 points, 30-10, although they narrowed it to 35-25 at the halftime break.

Tabor continued to chip away at the Pirates’ lead as the Bluejays began the second half, before a basket in the paint from forward Hannah Paust finally tied it, 44-44, with just over eight minutes left to play. Senior guard Katlyn Mary stepped in less than a minute later to give Tabor a two-point lead. Park would tie it again moments later, before another basket from Paust off an assist from point guard Nikki Lewis gave Tabor a lead they would not give up the rest of the game.

After scoring five unanswered points to make it 53-46, with 5:53 remaining, Tabor broke out a seven-point run that gave them a double-digit lead, 60-48. The Bluejays continued to push their advantage for the final 12-point margin.

Paust put up a very strong performance for Tabor, recording 16 points and pulling down five rebounds. Other Bluejays making doubles in points included forward Janelle Rust with 15, Nikki Lewis with 12 and Katelyn Mary with 10 points. Rust led the defensive effort with six rebounds.

The Bluejays outscored the Pirates on the line, 33-18, and made 40 points off turnovers compared to Park’s 20 points. They also had 33 points off the bench to Park’s 13.
