Blue-green algae bloom discovered in Hillsboro Heights pond; warning signs to be posted

The city of Hillsboro soon will be posting warning signs at the retaining pond in the Hillsboro Heights development after discovering a major blue-green algae bloom earlier this week.

?The city of Hillsboro will be erecting signs around the pond warning of dangerous conditions for humans and animals ? similar to what the Corps (of Engineers) posts at the (Marion) Reservoir,? said Morgan Marler, senior water treatment technician for the city. ?The north end, where the water is running out of the pond, looks to be the worst.

?Unfortunately, that pond has become a fishing spot,? Marler added. ?We really want people to stay away and to also keep their pets away.?

Marler said yesterday she was would be flushing a hydrant near the pond in an effort to flush some of the concentrated sludge away from town.
