Elcon Service ownership passes among friends, coworkers

Gib Suderman is the majority partner of Elcon Services, which he acquired from longtime owner and coworker Fred David in June.

In 1963, Fred David opened Elcon Services to meet a need in Hillsboro.

Forty-four years later, David sold his shares to his long-time partner Gib Suderman in June.

Most recently, Suderman sold shares to Jonah Gehring, an employee of Elcon Services, in September.

Pat Bartel wins senior women’s title

Pat Bartel, Hillsboro, won the 2007 Women?s Senior Golf Tournament Thursday at Hills?boro Municipal Golf Course.

Bartel, playing in the 50-59 age division, shot an 83 over 18 holes. The next-best score in the tournament was an 88 by Nancy Alt, Abilene, who won the 60-64 division.

Utting is local men’s senior champ

Stan Utting, Hillsboro, won the 33rd annual Men?s Senior Golf Tournament Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 12-13, at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.

Utting shot a 72 over 18 holes to win the 55-59 age division and the tournament.

Five golfers shot a 77 for the next-best score.

For the second time in three games, the promise of a Hills?boro football victory ended with heartbreak in the final seconds.

This time the spoiler was Wichita Collegiate, who scored two touchdowns in the final 3:53 to sneak a 35-32 victory from the Trojans at Reimer Field.

Tabor slips to 0-2 at Sterling

Tabor College running back Demetrius Cox turns the corner and leaves a trail of defenders in his wake on a 22-yard fumble return late in Saturday?s 36-27 loss to Sterling. On the play, quarterback Jason Aubrey dropped back to pass, was sacked, and fumbled. Cox was Johnny-on-the-spot, scooping up the ball and sprinting across the width of the field before turning toward the end zone.

The price of British currency slid markedly over the weekend, but another Sterling saw its stock rise.

In Saturday night?s showdown of 0-1 teams in Week 2 of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference season, Sterling College exercised its option and pounded Tabor, 36-27.

The Hillsboro volleyball team battled back from the brink of defeat against Nickerson, then pounded Lyons to sweep both ends of their home triangular Tuesday, Sept. 11

The two wins gave the Trojans a 10-2 record for the season and an early lead in league play at 2-0.
