Safety record pays dividend for Marion

The City of Marion has received an unexpected insurance dividend of $19,749 because of its safety programs and safety history.

City Administrator David Mayfield announced the dividend that came through city insurer Case & Son from EMC Insurance during Monday?s regular Marion City Council meeting.

Mayfield also announced that a third candidate for city economic development director was interviewed last week by the selection committee.

Second ‘Amazing Race’ returns to Chingawassa Days

People attending Marion?s annual Chingawassa Days this weekend won?t have to watch television to catch the latest episode of ?The Amazing Race.?

For the second year, the Marion Historical Museum Board is planning Marion?s Amazing Race, an event loosely based on the TV show of the same name.

The big difference: all the locations in the event focus on historical Marion landmarks.

Fire chiefs say schedule controversy is doused

The Marion County Commis?sion met Friday, May 30, in a $602,371 payday meeting.

County Clerk Carol Maggard reported sales tax received from the state in May, collected in April, and generated in March at $44,516. The total sales tax for the year to date was $233,832, which is $8,710 ahead of the total received at this time last year.

Sorensen marks 5-year cancer-free milestone

To most people, five years seems like a lifetime. For cancer survivor Michael Sorensen of Hillsboro, it?s been the gift of a lifetime.

A cancer patient at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, Sorensen celebrated his five-year survivor mark with more than 200 fellow cancer survivors at the hospital?s ?Celebrate Life? event May 30.
