First team of HHS chess qualifiers prepare for state tourney

Six members of the Hillsboro High School Chess Guild will compete at the state tournament this Saturday at Maize High School. This is the first year of the guild’s existence. Pictured are qualifiers (from left) Zach Magnuson, Cody Blackketter, Ben Bosworth, Michael Christian, John Bartel and James Clark. Some 500 to 600 students from kindergarten through grade 12 will compete in the statewide tournament. Rounds begin about 9:30 a.m. with a Swiss pairing format of six 30-minute rounds per person. To qualify for the state tournament, candidates must play in a minimum of two tournaments with at least two wins per tournament.
