That No. 2 seeded Hillsboro defeated Hesston Saturday to win the sub-state tournament in Halstead was not a shocker — but no one foresaw the Trojans’ convincing 20-point margin of victory.

Fueled by their aggressive defense, the Trojans earned a berth at the Class 3A state tournament in Hutchinson this next week by defeating the Swathers 55-35.

The Trojans never trailed in the contest and built a 14-6 lead after one quarter. By halftime, Hillsboro had pushed the margin to 12 at 30-18. But a 12-3 advantage in the third quarter blew the game open and the Trojans carried a 42-21 lead into the final period.

Hesston inched to within 15 points at 44-29 with 3:53 to go, but hillsboro finished with an 11-8 edge down the home stretch to nail down the victory.

Three Trojans scored in double figures: JuliAnne Chisholm with 16, Tina Frick with 11 and Lora Andrews 10.

The win improved Hillsboro’s record to 20-3 as they look forward to their trip to Hutch.
