The Hillsboro High boys closed the books on a challenging season with a 67-48 loss to the top-seeded Southeast of Saline Trojans in the semifinals of the Class 3A sub-state tournament in Halstead on Friday night.
The Trojans from Hillsboro found themselves in an early hole, trailing SES 16-6 after one quarter. For the next two quarters, though, the two teams played to a virtual standoff as SES led 34-23 at halftime and 49-37 after three periods.
SES took advantage of defensive gambles by HHS in the final period to extend the lead to 19 by game’s end.
Lucas Hamm scored 23 points in his final game in a Trojan uniform. But SES had five players in double digits to improve their record to 21-1 for the season. Hillsboro finished at 11-11.
