Trojans sweep Dragons in final home appearance

Hillsboro High finished its regular-season home schedule by giving the home fans a pair of double-digit victories over Halstead Friday night (Feb. 16) at Brown Gymnasium.

The Hillsboro girls defeated the visitors 54-21. After one quarter, Hillsboro actually trailed, 6-4. But a 21-3 edge in the second quarter turned the game around and put the Trojans ahead 25-12 at intermission.

The Trojans utterly dominated the third quarter, outscoring Halstead 23-1 for a 48-13 bulge at the final break. By league rule, the teams played with a continuous clock in the final quarter.

It was fitting that on Senior Night, four Trojan seniors tied for team scoring honors. Lora Andrews, Hannah Marsh, JuliAnne Chisholm and Tina Frick each scored eight points to pace a balanced attack.

The win improves HIllsboro’s record to 15-3 for the season and 8-1 in league play.

The HHS boys, meanwhile, avenged a frustrating loss in December by taking a 50-38 win. The Trojans had their hands full, though. The game was tied, 7-7, after one quarter. Hillsboro held a tenuous 19-17 lead at halftime and was only slightly more comfortable at 33-29 after three quarters.

The Trojans stepped up in the fourth quarter, though, outscoring the Dragons 17-9 to secure the victory.

Lucas Hamm closed out his home career with 20 points to pace the Trojans, who improved to 9-9 overall and 6-3 in league play. The season record is back to even for the first time since the season opener.
