MHS girls fall to Lyons

The Marion High girls played Lyons to a 46-46 tie with 29 seconds left in the game, but lost 50-46.

Marion trailed 44-41 with 1:16 to go after hard foul sent Lyons senior Damara Lewis to the line with a chance to add to the visitors’ lead. Lewis made one of two free throws, and the Lions led by three.

But on the ensuing possession, Lewis fouled Julia Zeiner, a 5-foot-7 freshman, who brought the Warriors within two, 44-42.

Zeiner evened the score with a pair of free throws with 52 seconds to go. Nikki Kratzer, who finished with a game-high 25 points, broke the 44-all tie with a pair of free throws for Lyons with 47 seconds to play.

Zeiner knotted it again at 46 with a 6-footer off a sharp pass from Kalaya Jackson.

But Marion’s full-court press coverage broke down on the next play, and Lewis made a wide open shot in the lane. Marion did not score in the final 20 seconds.

In the first quarter, Zeiner generated a buzz in the home crowd during a sequence that took Marion from a 9-2 deficit to a 14-9 lead.

Zeiner scored four straight baskets in the run. The first was a layup. The second was an 8-footer assisted by Lindsey Hett and the third resulted from a Lyons turnover.

Zeiner poked the ball away from Chelsea Kratzer, laid it in and drew a foul. She nailed the free throw and followed up another Lyons turnover with a layup.

Zeiner’s fourth straight score was assisted by Morgan Cady, who also assisted on the first one.

After that basket, Zeiner stole the ball from Kratzer and drew another foul. The ensuing possession ended with Hett drilling a 3-pointer off a feed from Erin Carr.

The five-point margin was Marion’s biggest lead of the night.

Zeiner had 20 points but was the only Warrior to score in double digits. Lindsey Hett had nine points on 3-for-6 shooting from 3-point range.

Coming-Marion was scheduled to play Haven on Tuesday and will visit Halstead on Friday.
