Marion spelling bee planned for Jan. 24
Marion Elementary School will hold its annual spelling bee for students in grades four through six at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in the MES lunch room.
The first- and second-place winners, along with an alternate will compete in the Marion County Spelling Bee.
The public is invited to attend. Doors will close at 1:30.
Kansas Day meal Jan. 28 at Eastmoor
The women of Eastmoor United Methodist Church will celebrate Kansas Day with a noon meal Jan. 29.
The meal will include Kansas roast beef and homemade wheat bread at each table.
William S. Worley, historical consultant and adjunct professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, will portray Dr. Samuel Crumbine, the secretary of the Kansas Board of Health who initiated numerous health education campaigns in Kansas.

Reception Jan. 28 for Bernhardt’s 95th
Sadie Bernhardt of Marion will celebrate her 95th birthday with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion.
The reception will be hosted by her daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Dick Schwartz.
Born in 1912 on a farm southwest of Marion, she graduated from Canton High School and attended Tabor College in Hillsboro. She and husband Albert owned the Marion Hardware and Gift Shop for 25 years. She taught in many schools in the county.
She requests no gifts.
Stenzel named Leo of the Year
Nikki Stenzel of Tampa was honored as 2005-06 Leo of the Year at the Kansas Lions Winter Rally Banquet held Jan. 13 in Salina.
She received the award for her leadership ability, humanitarian services, community involvement, personal integrity and contribution to the Leo Club program.
Groundbreaking for USD 408 auditorium
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Unified School District 408 auditorium will be held at 12:15 p.m. Jan. 30 on the Marion Middle/High School campus.

Workshop Jan. 31 on cyber predators
Kevin Honeycutt will speak at two assemblies Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Hillsboro Middle School on protecting students from online predators.
The middle-school assembly will be at 2:15 p.m., followed by a parent assembly at 7 p.m.

PEO soup lunch Feb. 2 in Marion
The P.E.O. Chapter DB will sponsor a “Ground Hog Soup Lunch” at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2 in the Marion City Building basement.
The public is invited to attend. Proceeds will help finance P.E.O. scholarships.
