Hillsboro posted a pair of comfortable wins against Ellinwood on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Brown Gymnasium.
The Hillsboro girls got off to a sluggish start and trailed the Eagles by a point at halftime, 23-22. But the Trojans turned up their hustle a couple of notches in the second half to post a 64-48 victory.
Freshman Samantha Soyez came off the bench to score 20 points for Hillsboro, including four 3-pointers. JuliAnne Chisholm added 16 points. With the win, the Trojans improve to 9-2.
The boys, meanwhile, played well against an undermanned Ellinwood team and rolled to a 50-26 win in a game that was not as close as the final score would indicate. Trojan pressure limited the visitors to 3 points and 1-for-15 shooting in the first half. Playing against a zone, the Trojans managed 22 points.
But Hillsboro picked up its offensive game a notch in the third quarter, and led 42-11 by the time it was over. Under MCAA rule (a 30-point lead in the final period), the continuous clock kicked in for the fourth quarter.
Ironically, the Eagles scored the bulk of their points in the time-shortened period as they capitalized on several lapses by the Trojan reserves.
Lucas Hamm and Troy Frick each scored 9 points to pace the Trojans, who improve to 5-6 for the year.
