Hillsboro splits games with Wichita Collegiate

Tina Frick’s basket in the final 3 seconds of the game lifted Hillsboro to a 43-41 win at Wichita Collegiate on Tuesday night (Dec. 19).

HHS led 9-7 after one quarter, but a 3-point shooting exhibition by Collegiate’s Gena Camarena — three long-range bombs — lifted the Spartans to a 19-16 lead by intermission.

Hillsboro kicked up its game a notch in the second half, but Collegiate still led at the end of three quarters, 29-28, thanks to a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left by the Spartans’ Maddy Ravenstein.

But the Trojans bumped their defense one gear higher in the final quarter and the two teams battled to a 41-41 tie with a minute to go. The Trojans played for a last shot as the clock wound down. Collegiate knocked the ball loose, but JuliAnne Chisholm picked up the ball, tossed a soft pass to Frick near the basket and the senior post player put it in with 3 seconds showing. Collegiate turned the ball over as the buzzer sounded, to give Hillsboro the victory.

Chisholm led the Trojan attack with 23 points as Hillsboro improved to 5-1 heading into the holiday break.

The Hillsboro boys, meanwhile, struggled against the aggressive defense of the Spartans and ultimately lost a 51-33 decision.

HHS played the Spartans even in the first quarter, which ended at 9-9. But it became obvious in the second quarter the Trojans were having trouble keeping pace on the offensive end, as Collegiate pulled out to a 24-13 lead by halftime.

Collegiate’s Cole Fiegel scored 12 points in the third quarter while Hillsboro managed only one field goal, enabling the Spartans to extend their lead to 41-20 at the final break.

Lucas Hamm finished with 15 points as Hillsboro dropped to 2-4.
