Jason Plett (left) of the city electrical crew helps Bill McGovern of Foley Equipment, Wichita, unhook cables after lowering the city’s new $20,000 generator at city hall last week. Unlike its predecessor, the new generator is big enough to power all of city hall as well as storm sirens when a power outage occurs. City Administrator Steve Garrett said it also will be used during the hot days of summer for “peak shaving”-which means lowering the city’s electrical consumption at during its highest-use periods. Electrical companies set their rates for an entire year based on those “peak” periods.
