Playing at home, the Centre Cougars were defeated 32-18 by the Goessel Bluebirds.
Thieen Antoszyk scored a pair of touchdowns for the Cougars, and Seth Jirak added another, but Goessel simply had too much firepower for Centre to match.
“Goessel has a very good team,” Centre coach Kelly Steiner said. “We played even with them for most of the game, but field position hurt us in the second half.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Antoszyk gained 21 yards and put the Cougars up 6-0 early in the second.
Brett Goerzen caught a 14-yard pass from Garrett Hiebert to equalize the score less than three minutes after Antoszyk got the Cougars on the board 1:11 into the second quarter.
Jirak broke a 36-yard touchdown run to put Centre back on top with 5:48 to go in the half, but Travis Buller tied the game for Goessel with 22 seconds to go in the quarter.
Sheldon Goerzen opened the second half with a 5-yard touchdown catch from Hiebert, but Antoszyk kept the Cougars in the game with a 1-yard run later in the third quarter.
But the fourth quarter was all Goessel, as Brett Goerzen caught a 12-yard touchdown toss from Hiebert and Sheldon Goerzen hammered home a 3-yard run with 2:26 to go.
Hiebert managed the night’s only successful 2-point conversion after Goerzen’s score.
“We had a good season,” Steiner said. “We played a very difficult schedule and fought hard in every game.
“We will miss the seniors and will need a lot of people to step it up next year.”
Goessel coach Justin Coup could not be reached for comment before press time.
