Goessel upsets No. 1 Claflin

Goessel & Centre. The Bluebirds football team doubled up one of the top teams in the state with a 60-30 win over Claflin Friday in Goessel.

With the game tied at 22 at halftime, Goessel’s defense forced two punts and a turnover on downs. The defensive stands translated into offense for the Bluebirds, as GHS scored 30 unanswered points.

Craig Banman and Bubba Holder combined for 24 tackles, and Banman added a touchdown catch in the third quarter that put the Bluebirds up by two scores. Garrett Hiebert and Brett Goerzen each scored three touchdowns, and Hiebert went 16-22 passing for 168 yards.

“Tonight was a total team effort,” coach Justin Coup said. “We beat a very good Claflin team. Hopefully this will help build enthusiasm for the stretch run.”

Little River beat the Cougars 28-8, ensuring Goessel a place in bi-district play.

Thursday night, Goessel will travel to Centre for the final game of the regular season.

Peabody-Burns beat Yates Center 35-7 and Canton-Galva doubled up Solomon 40-20.

CGHS will travel to Herington on Thursday night and PBHS is set to welcome Olpe in Peabody.

All of Thursday’s kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m.
