GHS volleyball finishes 23-12

The Goessel High volleyball team won its regional tournament Tuesday night to secure its first regional title since 2002.

Having earned a bye in the first round, the Bluebirds defeated Burrton (25-23, 25-20) in the semifinals.

In the final match, Goessel defeated Central Christian in three games (19-25, 25-22, 25-23).

“This was a great night for this team,” coach Crysta Guhr said. “After struggling the last several nights out, this team showed a lot of determination, heart, and fight to battle back in these two matches and win. “

Courtney Berkholz was 28 of 29 serving with five aces. Berkholz also had 13 kills and eight digs.

Jennifer Raymond was 14 of 14 serving with two aces for the night and added seven digs in the wins.

Including Saturday, Kory Hiebert had another outstanding week with 46 kills, 30 downed blocks, 21 digs, and was 23 of 23 serving with two aces.

But the Goessel volleyball team did not advance at the sub-state finals over the weekend.

The Bluebirds beat Caldwell (25-12, 25-7) before falling to highly ranked Olpe (15-25, 20-25) in the finals.

The team finished with a record of 23-12.
