PBHS boys run to HOA title

The Heart of America cross-country teams gathered at Harvey County Lake for the league meet Oct. 12.

The Peabody-Burns boys took first place with 38 points, well ahead of Berean Academy (67), Trinity (73) and Sedgwick (77).

The Canton-Galva boys finished fifth (123) and Goessel came in seventh (149).

Andrew Topham claimed the top spot for PBHS with a time of 15:56, and three other Warriors finished in the top seven: Seth Alstrom (fifth, 17:52), Duane Unruh (sixth, 17:58) and Jacob Wolf (seventh, 17:59).

But the second group of PBHS runners put the Warriors in first place as a team: Aaron Topham (19th, 18:54), Ryan Wiebe (23th, 19:21), Kendall Wiebe (27th, 19:39), Curtis Frederick (30th, 19:46), Seth Methvin (32nd, 19:56) and Josh Klarman (34th, 20:02).

Carsten Scheben, Ethan Riggs and Martin Holkamp also ran for PBHS.

Billy Evans (18:16) finished first for Canton-Galva and eighth overall. Five other Eagles finished in the top 50: Brandon Shannon (12th, 18:23), Joseph Unruh (35th, 20:09), Amos Schikowsky (40th, 20:30), Alex Guttstadt (42nd, 20:39), Jesse Evans (43rd, 20:50) and Riley Nigh (50th, 21:21).

Sam Janzen and Codey Johnson also ran for CGHS.

Goessel’s top finisher was Martin Koppitz (15th, 18:29), who completed the race ahead of teammates Wade Wilson (22nd, 19:13), Casey Wedel (29th, 19:46), Isaac Fast (45th, 21:05), Jake Schrag (51st, 21:23) and Anthony Esau (54th, 21:41).

Chris Johnston (22:00), Niklas Burkhart (22:07), Chad Wedel (22:20) and Derek Kruger (22:30) finished the race in 57th, 58th, 59th and 60th, respectively.

Sam Lehrman, Matt Johnston and Travis Duerksen also ran for GHS.

Remington won the girls’ title with 40 points while Goessel finished fifth (68) and Canton-Galva seventh (150).

Peabody-Burns did not field a girls’ team.

Lisa Rohner (17:25) finished first for Goessel and fourth overall. Janessa Wedel finished 13th (18:18). Sara Boman (23rd, 19:25), Lindsey Wedel (28th, 19:23) and Freddy Noltenius (42nd, 20:00) rounded out the Bluebirds’ scoring.

Caitlin Nelson finished first for the Eagles and 31st overall in 19:40. She was followed by Sarah Glavin (41st, 20:56), Lynn Volkman (50th, 22:01) and Michelle Shannon (52nd, 23:10).

Samantha Pickens (24:32), Jessica Rosine (25:23) and Erica Frederick (28:51) ran for PBHS.

Coming-The Class 2A regional meet for Peabody-Burns and canton-Galva is scheduled for Oct. 21 at El Dorado State Park, Bluestem Point. The girls run at 11 a.m. and the boys at 11:30.

Goessel and Centre will run in the Class 1A regional at Lake Afton near Wichita. Girls run at 1 p.m. and boys at 2 p.m.
