Centre third in league volleyball tourney

At the Eisenhower League Volleyball Tournament played Saturday at Centre, the Cougars lost to White City and Hope but defeated Solomon, Elyria and Wakefield.

Centre started the day with a win over Solomon (25-13, 25-21) and made short work of Elyria (25-12, 25-12).

In those two matches, Kylie Burhoop recorded 14 kills and three aces and Alisha Barney had 11 kills for the Cougars.

In its last game in pool play, Centre lost to Hope, the second-place team, 25-23, 25-21.

Barney had four kills and four blocks and Burhoop had five kills, a block and three aces in that match.

Centre was overmatched in its semifinals match against eventual champion White City, losing 25-22, 25-17.

In that match, Selena Seifert stepped up her game, serving five aces and setting up five kills.

While White City and Hope dueled for the Eisenhower League championship, Centre rallied for third place, overcoming a 19-25 first-game loss against Wakefield.

Alyssa Luna had seven kills and Samantha Alvarez had 12 assists in the match as Centre took the second and third games 25-20, 25-20.

The Cougars’ record now stands at 18-10 as the team prepares for regionals Oct. 17 at St. Xavier.
