Museum event to honor 100 years

A special birthday event will be held Oct. 14 at the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel in honor of the Preparatory School, the fourth building in the complex to turn 100 years old.

All eight museum buildings will be open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

More than 100 items in the Immigrant House have been tagged as being 100 years old. Other buildings also have tagged artifacts.

Several “hands on” items will be located in the Museum Bank Building, where visitors can learn how pioneers ironed their laundry, made butter, planted corn and more.

A Rintsupp (beef and vegetable soup) meal and cake will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the Preparatory School.

The Tall Grass Express String Band will perform at 7 p.m. Charlie Laughridge, fiddle player from Council Grove, Loren Ratzloff, banjo player from rural Canton, and Annie Wilson, guitarist from the Flint Hills, will sing and strum in vintage style.

All former Preparatory students are invited to receive special recognition and share their stories.

The public is invited to attend. Donations will be accepted.

Lord’s Acre dinner planned for Oct. 9

Valley United Methodist Church in Marion will hold a Lord’s Acre dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in the fellowship hall of the church, located at 300 E. Santa Fe.

Tickets costing $7 for adults and $3 per child may be purchased at County Seat or the church office.

Carryout is available.

Walk kids to school in Oct. 4 event

Parents of children in kindergarten through second grade at Marion Elementary School are invited to observe International Walk Your Child to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Parents and children will meet at 7:45 a.m. at Eastmoor Church in Marion to walk to school together.

Prizes will be given to all children participating. Juice and breakfast bars will be served.

S-N-C to perform at Renaissance festival

The Hillsboro High School vocal group Spirit-N-Celebration will be singing Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival in Bonner Springs.

The group will sing a selection of madrigals during four separate performances on stages throughout the festival.

Tickets for free admittance to the festival may be picked up at the HHS office or by contacting choir director Lynn Just at 947-3991.

Cubs, Scouts plan trick-or-treat event

In honor of October as National Food Bank Month, the Hillsboro Cubs and Scouts will conduct a “Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat” collection from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.

Hillsboro residents may leave non-perishable food in bags on their doorsteps for the trick-or-treaters to pick up. If missed or in a rural area, take the food to your church or grocery store.

All food collected will go to the Main Street Ministry food bank.

Blood drive Oct. 9 at Goessel church

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the Goessel Mennonite Church, 109 S. Church.

Donors must be in good health, weigh 100 pounds or more and be at least age 17, or age 16 with a completed parental consent form found on www.bloodgiveslife.org.

Cottonwood plans 5 revival services

Cottonwood Valley Independent Baptist Church in Hillsboro will host revival services from Thursday, Oct. 5, through Sunday, Oct. 8.

Services will begin at 7 p.m. through Saturday with Sunday services at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Evangelist Gary Shock from Sweet Springs, Ala., will preach at each service. Special music and congregational singing are also planned for each service.

The public is invited to attend.

First, Trinity plan renewal meetings

First Mennonite and Trinity Mennonite churches will host renewal meetings Sunday, Oct. 8, and Monday, Oct. 9.

Luke Hartman will speak on “Prayer: The Vital Link” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Trinity, 211 S. Elm. Special music will be offered by Hillsboro High School’s Spirit-N-Celebration.

The service will be followed by a chili dinner served by Trinity-First Youth as a fund-raiser for the 2007 Youth Convention in San Jose, Calif.

Hartman has been sharing the gospel across the country for the last 11 years. Formerly a university professor and college basketball coach, he now serves as an autism/behavior specialist in Harrisonburg (Va.) public schools.

He will also speak on “Extending the Kingdom” at 7 p.m. Sunday at First, 102 S. Ash, as well as on “The Gift of Holiness” at 7 p.m. Monday.

The evening services will also feature hymn sings led by Jennifer Hope of Tabor College.

The public is invited to attend.

Centre hosts FFA Greenhand event

More than 300 Greenhands, first-year FFA members, from 23 schools traveled to Centre High School Sept. 23 for the South Central District Greenhand Conference.

Centre Greenhands in attendance were Zach Antoszyk, Shelby Deines, Jared Diepenbrock, Alex Hajek, Heath Hill, Jacob Jennings, Stephen Kaiser, Sheila Makovec, Leann Pankratz, Dallas Rose, Samantha Seifert, Seth Stroda and Marc Washington.

Sam Ehrlich of Marion finished first on the Greenhand information test. Heath Hill finished fourth and Ryan Jones of Marion finished seventh.

Canton-Galva FBLA plans pancake feed

The Canton-Galva High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America will hold its annual pancake feed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7 in the high-school cafeteria.

The meal includes all-you-can-est pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee.

Tickets may be purchased for $5 per adult and $3 per child 10 and under from high-school students or at the door.

A silent auction for food and craft items will also be held.
