State champ coaches from Burns, Durham to attend book signing

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Two coaches who won Class BB state basketball championships with teams from Marion County high schools years ago will be available to autograph a book about those days this Saturday, Sept. 30, in McPherson.

Harvey Loy, coach of the 1953 champion Burns Hornets, and Dennis Brunner, coach of the 1963 champion Durham Hornets, will appear with McPherson resident Steven Farney, author of the new book, “Title Towns: Class BB Boys Basketball Champions of Kansas.”

The book, incorporating game-by-game summaries of every championship season, chronicles the 17 teams that won titles during the years Class BB-which included the smallest schools in the state-was part of the classification system in Kansas (1952-1968).

Mentioned in those stories are more than 200 schools who challenged the eventual champions for state supremacy.

Others who will be in attendance at the book-signing are McPherson coaching legend Jay Frazier, who won the first of his five state championships while at Burdette, as well as several players from these teams.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Bookshelf, 204 N. Main, McPherson.

Farney’s book also is available for sale at Thee Bookstore in Hillsboro.
