Topham wins on home course

Cross-country teams from Centre, Goessel, Marion and Peabody-Burns competed at the Peabody Invitational Sept. 14.

The PBHS varsity boys finished first, just eight points ahead of the second-place Warriors from Marion.

For the girls, Danielle Cope (15:48) ran a personal-best time, followed by Camille Christensen (16:58) and Tacy Taylor (17:01).

All three medaled for Marion, finishing second, 10th and 11th, respectively.

Jaclyn Deforest (18:37), Katie Hett (18:58) and Brooke Johnson (19:31) also set personal best times and rounded out the scoring for the girls’ team.

The Marion girls finished with 84 points and in fourth place behind Bennington, Remington and Halstead, but ahead of Trinity, Hesston and Centre.

Peabody-Burns senior Andrew Topham won the boys’ varsity race by completing the 5-kilometer course in 16:42.

Marion runner Daniel Goentzel (17:46) finished second. Three other members of the MHS squad medaled: Ryan Jones (19:00, 11th), Louis Holt (19:07, 14th) and Luke Bowers (19:11, 18th).

Matt Kirkpatrick (20:33) finished 32nd and Logan Richmond (20:53) ran a personal best time on his way to 35th. Ben Leppke completed the course in 21:45, good for 39th place.

Brandon Meierhoff placed third in the one-mile middle school boys’ race, finishing with a personal-best time of 4:18.

Results from Centre, Goessel, and Peabody-Burns were not available by press time.

The teams are slated to meet again at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Marion Invitational. Canton-Galva also is scheduled to run in the races, which will be at Marion County Lake.
