Six-year-old Maria Rodriguez (bottom left) shows off the fire chief hat she got at the dunk tank where Marion County commissioner Randy Dallke was staying cool and raising funds for the Florence Fire Department at Monday’s “Fired Up” Labor Day events in downtown Florence. Shortly after Dallke (bottom right) dared 10-year-old Montgomery Moore to dunk him for a third straight set of throws, Moore did just that. At top, Charlie Grieco, Carrie Jones and Mark Grieco of the QSS Smokin’ Barbecue team of Lenexa finish preparing their pork butt entry at Florence’s first state-sanctioned barbecue cookoff. The team finished 21st in that category and fourth overall. Of 35 teams, JP Custom Smoke of Wichita took home $3,000 as grand champion.
