Second-year cross country coach Cindy Riedel will have a team of five girls and one boy at Centre High School in 2006, one more than she had last season.

This year the Cougars are “looking to be much more competitive this year and hope to medal at more than one meet,” Riedel said.

This fall’s team will be led by senior Brittany Owens. Following Owens will be four juniors: Justine Jennings, Allie Will, Kristine Jirak and Elya Medikhanova.

“(Owens) is our strongest runner this year,” Riedel said. “She is really pushing herself to make this her best season.”

Sophomore Canh Antoszyk will be the youngest runner and only member of the boys’ team.

“He ran for us some last year and I think that experience will give him an edge this year,” Riedel said.

The Cougars face many of the same challenges as in last year’s “rebuilding season,” but they the team hopes to improve on last year’s successes.
