Hillsboro lifeguard team third at state competition

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Four lifeguards from the Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center came home Sunday, July 9, with a third-place team plaque and two individual medals after competing against 11 other lifeguard teams across the state.

The one-day competition was the second annual Midwest Lifeguard Tournament presented by the South-Central Kansas Aquatic Council, hosted this year by Hutchinson’s Salt City Splash Aquatic Center.

Chelsey Hannon, Jaque Fisher, John Vineski and Jenny Terrell competed against other co-ed teams in individual events, such as rescuing a drowning victim, and team events, such as back boarding a victim with a spinal injury.

Participants were awarded points based on accuracy and thoroughness of procedure, and for some events, speed.

Vineski placed first in his individual event, rescuing a distressed swimmer, and Harmon finished second in her event, rescuing a submerged, passive victim.

Hillsboro’s team placed third overall with a point total of 72, coming in under Hutchinson’s team with 109 points and Salina’s team with 79 points.

Other participating aquatic centers included Derby, Lawrence and McPherson.

Head lifeguard Melissa Cutburth coached the team and brought them to the competition.
