Goessel boys claim track championship

The Goessel boys’ track team won the title Friday at the Remington Invitational while the girls placed 13th.

“Our boys are improving in different events each week,” coach Sandy Banman said. “They’re looking for ways to score as many points as possible and boost our team points.”

Leading the way was Justin Fensky and Garrett Hiebert.

Competing for the first time this season after battling back problems, Fensky was a double winner in long jump (19-33⁄4) and triple jump (41-71⁄2) while Hiebert set a meet record in the javelin with a toss of 181-9.

Brett Goerzen placed second in pole vault (11-0). Sheldon Goerzen was third in the 300-meter hurdles (43.06) and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.73). Tyler Schroeder placed third in shot put (46-23⁄4) and discus (128-3. Craig Banman was third in pole vault (10-6). Brian Meeks was third in javelin with a personal-best throw of 163-1.

For the girls, top finishers were Tricia Fensky, fourth in pole vault (7-0), and Courtney Berkholz, sixth in the 100 (13.6).

Tescott-The Goessel boys won the team title last Tuesday at the Tescott Relays. The Bluebird girls finished ninth in the 17-team field.

“This meet really boosted the confidence of both teams,” coach Vanessa Schroeder said. “It was a chance to see many schools we don’t see during the season and to give us an idea of what we may see at the state meet.”

The boys were led by Tyler Schroeder and Garrett Hiebert.

Hiebert won the javelin (174-2) and triple jump (41-2) while Schroeder won discus (136-53⁄4) and was second in shot put (47-5).

Other top finishers included Craig Banman, second in both the 300-meter hurdles (43.34) and the 110-meter hurdles (17.41), Brett Goerzen, third in the 100 (11.89), and Brian Meeks, third in javelin (143-11).

Tricia Fensky won the pole vault by clearing 7-6.

Goessel will host the Heart of America League track meet on Friday.
