Farmer’s Market opens Thursday

Hillsboro Farmer’s Market will begin at 5 p.m. this Thursday, May 4, at the corner of Grand and Washington streets.

The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the kickoff event. Hot dogs and other goodies will be available for purchase.

The lineup for May features shopping for Mother’s Day on May 11, personal used vehicles for sale May 18 in time for graduation, and bring-your-own garage sale and flea market May 25.

Chingawassa price goes up May 26

People have until Friday, May 26, to buy a Chingawassa Days button at the reduced rate of $20. The price of the button increases to $30 after that date.

The 10th annual Marion festival is June 2-4.

A button is required as admission to all Chingawassa events, including the Saturday night concert featuring the classic rock band The Guess Who, a Friday night barbecue, the Rhino Challenge Finals and the Chingawassa Idol talent competition.

Those not wishing to buy the all-access button can purchase a wristband that will gain them entrance to the park for Saturday activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. only. The wristband costs $5.

Open house to mark 90th birthday

Friends and family of Glen D. Klinkerman are invited to an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 14, in celebration of his 90th birthday.

The open house will be in the dining room at the Cedar’s Corts, 1071 Darlow Drive, McPherson.

The family requests no gifts.

Public prayer event planned for May 4

A community prayer gathering is being organized from noon to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, by Emprise Bank at Main and Grand in Hillsboro.

The event coincides with the National Day of Prayer.

Prayer will be offered for the nation, leaders and the community, according to organizers.

In case of bad weather, the event will be held in the city building.

Bake sale to raise funds for kitchen

A group from Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church is planning a bake sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 6, in front of the Quick Flick-Radio Shack store at 110 S. Main.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward the purchase of kitchen equipment for the church.

USD 410, clinic to give free physicals

Unified School District 410, in partnership with PMA-Hillsboro Family Practice Clinic, will be offering free sports physicals for students who will be in grades seven through 12 next school year and plan to participate in a school sport or a high school physical education class.

Parents who want their child to receive the free exam need to fill out a “Pre-participation Physical Form” and a “Permission to Participate Form.” The forms are being mailed to patron homes but also can be picked up at the high school office.

The forms must be filled out and returned by Thursday, May 11. The exams will be conducted on Tuesday, May 16, and Wednesday, May 17. Students in a physical education class will be seen by the doctor during that time.

The exam is valid for the 2006-07 school year.

Blood drive seeks 100 donors May 8

The American Red Cross is planning a blood drive in Hillsboro from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Trinity Mennonite Church.

The goal of local organizers is to have 100 donors. All blood types are needed, especially Type O, which can be given to almost anyone in an emergency.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in general good health.

Marion women at Lutheran meeting

Lois Johnson and Frances Ridgeway, members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marion, were among the more than 500 people who attended the Kansas District Lutheran Women’s Missionary League-Lutheran Women in Mission convention April 21-23 in Salina.

Participants adopted missions projects and financial aid to students in the amount of $72,000. They also made cards for nursing homes, wrote cards for military personnel and tied quilts. About 80 people walked in the park for mission donations.

They also donated craft items, paper supplies, games and health items to OCCK Inc. and Rebecca Morrison House in Salina.

HES kindergarten program is May 8

The Hillsboro Elementary School kindergarten classes will give their spring program at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 8, in the high school auditorium.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Engine show set for Memorial Day

Lehigh’s annual Antique Engine & Tractor Show is planned for Memorial Day, May 29, in downtown Lehigh.

Guest exhibitors are welcome to display their favorite hobbies and crafts. Lunch will be served and a parade will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will go toward improvements in the city park.

Buller to present flute recital May 11

Angela Buller, a junior music major at Tabor College, will present her junior flute recital at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 11, in the chapel-auditorium located in the H.W. Lohrenz Building.

Buller is also pursuing a minor in marketing.

“I would actually love to pursue a career in music marketing, whether that is advertising for orchestras or other musicians or some other random job that might luckily have something to do with both music and marketing,” she said.

Farmerettes bring recipe May 8

The Farmerettes will meet Monday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at the home of Irma Koop.

Koop will present the lesson titled “Walk around the Crock.”

Each member should bring a crock-pot recipe for roll call.

Educators attend Phi State meeting

Seven members of Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honor society of women educators, attended the annual Phi State convention April 21-23 at the Highland Convention Center in Great Bend.

Those attending were Pauline Holub, Rowena Olsen, Mary Olson, and Helen Reznicek from Marion, and Anita Boese, Ruth Hamm and Mary Regier from Hillsboro.

Participants attended general sessions and workshops throughout the weekend. Olson received the organization’s Hostelship Award at a birthday luncheon.

The keynote speaker for the Presidents’ and Founders’ Banquet on Saturday evening was Marci Penner, founder of the Kansas Sampler Festival. She spoke on “Exploring Kansas.”

Mission trip focus of Sunday meeting

The Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church is hosting Missions to Mexico Sunday at 7 p.m., May 7.

The program will be presented by James Fischer and family, Rose Buschman, Ernie Luna and the following Tabor College students: Eva Arnett, Joanna Chappa, Ryan Clement, Tiffany Johnson, Krystal Koontz, Leah Rose, LynAnne Wiest and Brandon Voth. The group participated in March on a mission trip to Reynosa, Mexico.

The public is invited.

Holocaust witness to share May 7

Forrest Robinson of Winfield will share memories of World War II concentration camps Sunday, May 7, at 4 p.m. at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion.

Robinson, who is one of the few surviving witnesses of the Holocaust, has been pastor of several churches as well as an interim president of Southwestern College.

The public is invited and fellowship hour will follow.

Cost-share signup for Chase County

Chase County landowners need to be aware that the cost-share signup for the 2007 fiscal year is underway.

The sign-up deadline is May 31.

The State Conservation Commission, with funding from the State Water Plan Fund, administers state cost-share programs through conservation districts to landowners who would like to install approved conservation practices on their land.

To request cost-share assistance, call Denise at 620-273-6462 or stop by the office at 219 Broadway in Cottonwood Falls.

Camp Wood YMCA to hold open house

Individuals can learn about summer camp and retreat options by visiting Camp Wood YMCA during its open house and 90th birthday party May 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. near Elmdale.

Visitors can enjoy camp activities including canoeing, archery, lead horse rides for younger children, the Alpine climbing tower and fishing.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions and supervise activities.

Drawing and door prizes will be given out at the end of the day in conjunction with Kansas Wildscape’s OK Kids Day with sponsorship from Bass Pro and Capital Federal.
